What Is Fastag:
Fastag is an electronic toll collection system based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. Implemented in India on all national highways since December 1, 2019, it has seen a mixed response from customers and comes with its own set of technological and operational issues. While it does make travel on national highways in India cashless and digital, the revised mandatory deadline of January 15, 2020, for Tag seems to be a bit to hurry up.
Fastag Online Banks and other partners such as PayTM have been struggling to manage the incessant volumes of Fastag subscriptions and top-ups flowing through their digital accounts. In this e-book, we’ll see how it works, and that how can you, as a customer and a traveler, make the most out of it.
Fastag Banks List:
Many banks and the payments bank, PayTM have partnered with NHAI to provide Tag to customers. Customers can link their bank account to the Fastag account, and the toll amount would directly get deducted from their linked bank account once they let the RFID device’s light flashing on the toll barrier read the bar code of their Fastag affixed on the vehicle’s windscreen.

While Fastag enables almost halt-free and hassle-free rides for customers on national highways, its cashless nature has left the not-so-digitally-savvy worried and completely unprepared. They are wondering how they would activate and use when they don’t even know how to use a smart-phone, leave alone any mobile apps, phone banking features or digital wallets. Anyhow, it will be successful only when the RFID detector reads the bar codes of Fasags aflixed on the windshield of the approaching four-wheelers. The drivers may even need to move their cars a bit back and forth on the toll barrier so, that their bar codes catch the laser beam light of the reading RFID device installed on the barrier.

Post this date, if someone is traveling by a four-wheeler on any national highway and doesn’t possess Fastag as affixed on the front windscreen of the vehicle, along with proper recharge and top-up did in the FASTag account, she or he will have to pay more than double the toll amount in cash in the form of penalty. Only then they can cross the toll point and proceed ahead. Fastag is not applicable to two-wheelers, for which the rides anywhere would continue to be toll-free.

All in all, while the move has been enforced with noble intent, its enforcement has been too hasty and unplanned. Likewise, customers are likely to take time before they actively adapt to the change, and the government too will hopefully be considerate of the people’s limitations and their need for more time. Thus, the government may also introduce newer avenues and channels soon to educate the customer and ensure that tags are readily purchased and used by all frequent national highway users, to say the least.
